I’d like to continue to delude myself that being a research scientist is the best way for me to change the world. If there was a better or easier way to change the world for the better, I might just do that, instead…but for the time being, doing research is the best way of improving our world!

I would build toilets for everyone. Many people don’t have access to toilets which can lead to ill health as their waste ends up where they drink. Toilets are fairly simple yet effective.

Mine would be to discover something that has wide ranging applications, solving as many problems in one go. Huge problems of today include pollution, poverty and overpopulation. Working on these problems would be world changing, and I’d love to extend my research into them!

More generally I think one of the biggest challenges facing humanity at the moment is massive human overpopulation. One way that research shows us that works to reduce this is increasing education (especially of women) in developing countries. It’s not something that I do in my work now, but anyone working in this area would make a real difference 🙂
For me a bit more realistically, I really want to save a species that’s on the verge of extinction, it might not be hugely world changing, but I think it would be a great way to make a difference.

I would like to find a way to make sure that every human on the planet had clean air to breathe, clean water to drink and at least one meal a day – sadly this isn’t a reality for a large number of people around the world at the moment.
