Trees, plants and algae release oxygen into the environment, so they give us air to breathe and also they get rid of carbon dioxide from the environment. Carbon dioxide is a gas which causes global warming, as well as contributes to acid rain. So they are very important! Also we use trees to build with and they give us shelter! They also give shelter to small animals and insects. We also eat lots of plants, as do other animals, so they are important for the ecosystem.

Trees also help with capturing rainfall. When it rains at the top of a hill, the trees on the hill help stop all the rain racing down and flooding the places below. They and other plants also capture pollutants stopping them going into our rivers and killing their inhabitants.
