That’s a difficult question because it’s going to be a very personal answer. Being a scientist allows me to do what I feel most passionate about–learning, being curious, solving problems.
In my research I get to ask cool questions, and then figure out ways to answer them. I also get to teach the next generation of scientists who will hopefully go on to do amazing things. I love my job because every day is different, and I get to work with some amazing people.
Being a scientist is a bit like being a superhero. You get to spend your days trying to help people with pretty much purely thought and reasoning! Of course there is a lot of getting your hands dirty too, whilst doing the work (if you’re an experimentalist). That’s to say, there are usually two kinds of scientists: experimentalists (people who do actual experiments hands-on like mixing chemicals or seeing how animals behave), and theorists (people who think about problems in their heads and write down equations). They tend to work together, and few are good at both. I am a theorist, personally, and I love to think hard about things! It really stretches my brain. And learning something new everyday is a privilege.
I really like being a scientist, I enjoy coming to work at the university and having time to think about the biggest problems affecting our society at the moment then try to find ways to solve them and make the air better for everyone to breathe.
