Hi Joshua, It’s Daniel not Becky but as you asked us all I’m going to answer as well… as we built more houses and change agricultural practices a lot of wildlilfe suffers from loss of habitat. We literally take away their homes and the food that they need to survive. This is well demonstrated with ‘monoculture’ – the growing of one crop type over a large area – and this often involves removing ancient hedgerows and clearing trees.

Hi Joshua! Also not Becky (sorry), but I thought I’d give my view. I believe it is the destruction of environments which animals live. When woodlands are cut up to make room for houses, it pushes animals into territories they are not familiar with and cannot survive in. Also competition increases as there is less space for lots of animals to live and feed in. It’s like if rooms in your house are closed and everyone has to sleep in one room – it’d become claustrophobic very quickly! And imagine if someone farts…ewww!

You know you’ve not asked Becky!? One issue I face living in the city is how daring the animals which live in the city are and are foraging bins rather than catching wildlife. This leads to an unhealthy diet of McDonalds chips which isn’t good for them, as tasty as chips are.

Hi Joshua! Great question. Wildlife is under pressure for so many reason, habitat loss (because we need to build houses), habitat fragmentation (where we break up wild areas that wildlife live, so they can’t move around as easily), predation (we love our pet cats and we have over 10million in the UK, and they are super predators), persecution (where people kill or remove species) and pollution that you already mentioned (which can also include light and noise pollution).

Of all these pressures and threats, habitat loss is the pressure which has the biggest impact on wildlife. There are so many ways that we can live alongside wildlife but we need to think about how we build and design out cities. There is also lots that you can do to help wildlife in your garden (e.g plants which are good for bees, moving the lawn less, feed the birds etc.)
