Hi Jess, there are many things that you can do and far to many to list here. If you want to help insects why not build a bug hotel, plant bee friendly plants and make sure that yoru parents are not using toxic chemicals to kill weeds in the garden. You can also put out bird feeders and water as many other animals will use these.

You can easily make your garden better for insects. Don’t mow the lawn as often so that flowers and grasses have a chance to grow, leave some ‘weedy’ patches, or plant some pollinator friendly plants. If you look after the insects then the birds and mammals (like house sparrows and hedgehogs) will love visiting your garden because you are feeding them what they need! You can also put out bird seed for the birds or dog food out for the hedgehogs 🙂

Wildlife can really benefit from the small changes that people make. Goldfinches are beautiful little birds that you can find in gardens. Their numbers were in decline because of changes happening in our farms over the last 50+ years, but they are making a massive recovery now because of garden bird feeding. People have started feeding very small seeds called niger seeds which goldfinches love and so they are helping these birds survive in what is quite a challenging environment (our towns and cities).

That’s a really admirable question to ask! Thank you for caring for animals around you, first of all. You can look after them by being careful about their environments. The places that animals live is known as their ecosystem. Keeping places where animals and insects remain safe is a good way, like rocks and baskets. Keeping places clean is important too, so animals are safe and healthy.

I think your best bet is to volunteer to work with local environmental groups. They will have great ideas for how you can effectively improve the wildlife in your area. The RSPB might be somewhere to start–but many others exist! Good luck!
