When you collect data from analysers measuring the concentrations of different chemicals in the air you end up with lots and lots of numbers. These are imported into a large database so that we can write code that will then answer specific questions and also allow us to model different scenarios to measure the impacts of intervention or change before it really happens. You could try and find out what would the air quality be like in London if all the airports were shut or all the cars were taken off the road. The questions that we ask are much more complicated than this but allow us to make good recommendations to the people who then make the regulations.
