There are two important parts to evolution. These are natural selection and adaptation. Natural selection is also known as “survival of the fittest”, where those which have the best traits to survive in an environment will be most likely to survive. As a result, these species can reproduce, and pass on their traits to their offspring. The weaker members of the species die off, due to competition for resources such as land, food, shelter and water. Adaptation is where a species develops traits which allow the species to survive in an environment. This occurs naturally, through mutations (changes) in the genes (genes which code for the structure of the body). So in a way, adaptation drives natural selection. It is through natural selection and adaptation over time, that evolution occurs. The process is random, with small changes occurring generation by generation, so it takes millions of years.
