Many animals and plants can live in cities, and you’d be surprised at which species thrive there! From plants that can grow through concrete (like japanese knotweed), to peregrine falcons (the fastest member of the animal kingdom – which are actually doing better in cities than they our in the country), our cities and towns are full of wildlife. Cities are challenging places to live as there is more pollution, more people (and so disturbance), and over 10 million cats (who are little, well fed, super hunters!)… but they also present many opportunities for those brave enough to live there. People feed wild birds in their gardens, helping millions of birds each year to survive and have young. In fact this kind of feeding is also helping a large bird of prey called the red kite do really well in our cities. Red kites had been wiped out in England and Scotland until the 1980s but through a series of reintroductions they are now doing very well, partly because people feed them. Hundreds of people are throwing our raw meat and kitchen scraps to large birds of prey in their gardens, which is amazing!!
