If the whole world stopped using fossil fuels overnight we would see a significant reduction in air pollution almost straight away. We would still have many other sources of pollution so it wouln’t solve the whole problem in one go but it would be a good start!

We’d have a much cleaner world, with cleaner air all round as well as less damage to buildings and natural habitats. This is because pollution leads to acid rain as well – so removing the source of the acid rain leads to less acid rain formation.

Southampton actually closed some roads to traffic on Sunday so that people could cycle between the city centre and the parks. The result was a lot less cars and the effect was noticeable that cars weren’t releasing fumes. Eight years ago, an ash cloud meant that there were no flights from UK airports. My office is next to an airport and the air didn’t smell of sprouts anymore!
