Most industrial processes cause some form of pollution and factories can use all sorts of chemicals that smell bad. Moe concerning is that a lot of pollution has no smell at all so you do not realise that it is there.

It depends on what they’re producing. Often chemicals are used that contain things like sulphur and ammonia, which release bad smells.

You haven’t smelt anything bad until you’ve been to a sewage plant. Horrific smelt but brilliant science because they extract out all the good stuff to be used a fertiliser and treat what is left so that it can return to the water system.
